One of the questions we hear from pool owners is:
"How long should I run my pool pump every day?"
There isn't one magic number that works for every swimming pool.
Pump run time depends on the pool, the equipment, the weather, how much the pool is used, and how effectively the system circulates and filters the water.
But one thing is certain:
Your pool needs adequate circulation.
A pump that isn't running long enough can contribute to poor water quality, inadequate filtration and recurring algae problems.
Why Does Pool Circulation Matter?
Your pool pump does much more than move water around.
When the circulation system is operating, water is being drawn from the pool, passed through the filter and returned to the pool.
This helps:

Help the sanitizer reach the entire pool

Rather than automatically choosing a number of hours because someone says "that's what a pool should run," pay attention to how your particular pool responds.
A pool in Florida may need different attention during periods of extreme heat, heavy rain, high pool use or an algae problem than it does under normal conditions.
What Happens If the Pump Doesn't Run Long Enough?
Insufficient circulation can create several problems.
Poor chemical distribution
Chemicals need to circulate through the pool.
If the pump isn't running adequately, the water may not mix as effectively as it should.
More opportunity for algae
Algae likes conditions where it can establish itself.
Good circulation, proper sanitation and appropriate water chemistry all work together to make the pool a less favorable environment for algae.
Reduced filtration
Your filter can only remove contaminants from water that actually passes through it.
If the pump isn't operating, the filter isn't doing its job.
Stagnant areas
Poor circulation can leave areas of the pool with less water movement.
This is particularly important around steps, corners and other areas where water movement may already be weaker.
Your Return Jets Matter Too
Don't overlook the position of the return jets.
The goal isn't simply to make the surface of the pool look like it's moving.
Good jet positioning can help create a circular pattern of water movement throughout the pool and help move debris toward the skimmer and drain.
A beautiful pattern of water rippling across the surface doesn't necessarily mean the pool is circulating effectively.
The water needs to move through the entire pool.
What About the Filter?
Pump run time and filtration go hand in hand.
A dirty or restricted filter can reduce water flow.
As the filter collects dirt and debris, resistance can increase and circulation can decrease.
That's why it's important to know what your filter pressure normally reads when the filter is clean.
If the pressure rises significantly above your normal clean-filter reading, the filter may need attention.
Different types of filters require different cleaning procedures, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for your equipment.
What If My Pool Is Turning Green?
If your pool is already green, simply increasing pump run time may not solve the problem.
A green pool is generally a sign that algae has established itself, and you need to look at the entire system.
Check:

Circulation is one part of the overall pool-maintenance system.
What If My Pool Won't Hold Chlorine?
The same principle applies.
If you're adding chlorine and it keeps disappearing, don't automatically assume that you need to keep adding more.
Look at the whole system:
Chemistry + sanitation + circulation + filtration + equipment
All of these work together.
If one part isn't functioning properly, the others may not be able to compensate indefinitely.
Florida Weather Can Change Things
Florida pools have to deal with some pretty demanding conditions.
Heat, sunlight, rain, storms, pollen, vegetation and increased pool use can all affect water quality.
A pool that behaves perfectly during one period may need additional attention during another.
After heavy rain or other significant weather events, it's a good idea to check your pool rather than assuming everything is still operating normally.
Don't Forget the Pump Itself
If your pump isn't operating correctly, no amount of adjusting the timer is going to solve the underlying problem.
Pay attention to:

Air bubbles coming from the returns

Air visible in the pump basket

Leaks around the pump

A pump that repeatedly loses prime

These can be signs that the circulation system needs attention.
The Bottom Line
There isn't one pump run-time number that is right for every Florida swimming pool.
The important question isn't simply:
"How many hours should I run my pump?"
It's:
"Is my pool getting enough effective circulation and filtration to maintain good water quality?"
If your pool is consistently clean, properly sanitized and circulating well, your current schedule may be working.
If you're dealing with recurring algae, cloudy water, low sanitizer levels or poor water movement, the pump schedule may be only part of the problem.
Sometimes the answer isn't simply run the pump longer.
It's figuring out why the pool isn't maintaining good water quality in the first place.
