One of the most frustrating pool problems is adding chlorine to your pool, testing it later, and discovering that the chlorine level has dropped again.
If this keeps happening, the answer isn't necessarily to keep adding more chlorine.
Something may be causing your pool to use chlorine faster than it is being maintained.
After years of working with swimming pools, we've found that there are several things worth checking when a pool won't hold chlorine.
1. Start With the Water Chemistry
The first step is to test the water rather than guessing.
Your pool's chemistry needs to be properly balanced for the sanitizer to do its job effectively.
The basic areas to check include:

Chlorine
-
pH
-
Total alkalinity
-
Calcium hardness
-
Stabilizer
If the water isn't properly balanced, correcting the chemistry may be just as important as adding chlorine.
That's why our first recommendation is simple:
Test the water before adding more chemicals.
2. The Pool May Have a High Chlorine Demand
If you add chlorine and the level repeatedly disappears, there may be something in the pool consuming it.
Algae is one possibility.
A pool that has begun developing algae can consume sanitizer rapidly. This can create a frustrating cycle:
Low sanitizer → algae growth → increased chlorine demand → even lower sanitizer.
If your pool is also becoming green or developing recurring algae, don't treat the chlorine level as an isolated problem.
Look at the entire pool.
3. Check the Stabilizer
Stabilizer, also known as cyanuric acid, helps protect chlorine from being rapidly depleted by sunlight.
This is particularly important in Florida, where pools receive substantial sunlight.
If the stabilizer level isn't appropriate for the pool and its sanitizer system, chlorine can be lost more rapidly than expected.
Our older Monkey Rock pool-maintenance guidance specifically included stabilizer as one of the basic water-balance measurements that should be monitored.
The important lesson is:
Don't assume that adding more chlorine is always the answer.
Sometimes you need to determine why the chlorine isn't remaining effective in the first place.
4. Look at Circulation and Filtration
Chemistry isn't the only thing that matters.
A pool needs good circulation to distribute chemicals throughout the water and move contaminants toward the filtration system.
If circulation is poor, parts of the pool can become stagnant.
Check:

Water flow from the return jets
-
The condition of the pool filter
-
Pump operation
-
Pump run time
-
Skimmer and pump baskets
-
Whether air is entering the circulation system
A dirty or restricted filter can reduce water flow.
And if circulation is reduced, the pool may have difficulty maintaining good overall water quality.
5. Check the Pool Equipment
If you have a saltwater pool, there is another important question:
Is the salt system actually producing chlorine?
A saltwater pool doesn't eliminate the need for chlorine.
The salt system generates chlorine from the salt in the pool water. If the salt cell is dirty or has calcium buildup, chlorine production can be reduced.
Your salt-cell system should therefore be inspected and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions.
A malfunctioning salt cell, controller problem, incorrect cell configuration or other equipment issue can leave a pool without the chlorine production you expect.
6. Don't Forget the Filter
The filter is an important part of the sanitation system.
A filter that is heavily loaded with dirt, debris or algae can restrict water flow and reduce circulation.
Your filter pressure should be familiar to you when the filter is clean. A significant increase from that normal reading can be an indication that the filter needs attention.
Different filter types require different cleaning procedures, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for your particular equipment.
7. Florida Weather Can Change the Demand on Your Pool
Florida pools are exposed to plenty of environmental conditions that can affect water quality.
Rain, debris, vegetation, high temperatures and increased pool use can all change what your pool is dealing with.
That's why a pool that normally holds its chlorine level may suddenly require more attention.
After significant weather events, it's worth checking the water rather than assuming everything is still where it was before the weather changed.
A Pool That Won't Hold Chlorine Is Trying to Tell You Something
If you're repeatedly adding chlorine and getting the same result, take a step back.
Ask:
Where is the chlorine going?
Is the water chemistry properly balanced?
Is there algae?
Is the stabilizer appropriate?
Is the pool circulating properly?
Is the filter clean?
Is the pump operating correctly?
If it's a saltwater pool, is the salt system producing chlorine?
These questions can often tell you much more than simply adding another dose of chlorine.
The Bottom Line
A pool that won't hold chlorine isn't necessarily a pool that needs more chlorine.
It may need better water balance, better circulation, better filtration, equipment maintenance, or attention to an underlying algae problem.
The goal isn't simply to keep adding chemicals.
The goal is to find out why the pool isn't maintaining good water quality in the first place.
